“Activism is my rent for living on the planet.” -- Alice Walker

Welcome

This guide was originally made in response to events in 2020 such as the killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor. Although the guide continues as a resource for social justice issues, the introduction below still seems relevent.

Harper College Social Justice Days of Action

There’s lots of speculation about how history will look back on 2020. Will this year be remembered as a time of deep divisions and deeper resentments or will it be the tipping point where empathy, equity awareness, and a new refusal of the status quo come together for sustainable, systemic change? Who will write the history, how many versions will there be, and how in this digital world could we possibly trust it? These are the questions we grapple with as a nation and as the Harper College community.

We, at the Harper College Library, don’t have all the answers, but we know with certainty that the story of 2020 is unfolding in real time, and we each have the power to shape it. We hope this guide will provide you with helpful resources including booklists, podcasts, videos, as well as links to organizations and influential voices to support your social justice awareness, education, and engagement. Truth.
