FYS Outcome

The Library Introduction activities help students achieve the following FYS outcome:

  • College Life-Navigating the System and Campus Resources
    • Utilize support services available in the college environment to meet students’ personal and academic needs

Library Hello

Library skills are just one small part of information literacy, but they are an important step for students new to Harper. Even if you have students do nothing else, having a librarian visit your class for a 5-minute introduction or sharing a few short introductory videos in Blackboard ensures students have been introduced to the Library and know it's a valuable resource.

Learning outcomes:

  • Students will be able to identify at least 2 ways the library can contribute to college success

Description:

A librarian can visit your course on campus or online to say hello and highlight some of the important ways the Library can help during their time at Harper.

If you have an online-only class or would just prefer an online option, a librarian can share about 5 minutes worth of videos to introduce your students to the Library.

Time needed:

5 minutes

Basic Library Introduction

If you can spare a few more minutes, a librarian can give your students a more thorough introduction. 20 minutes is just a suggestion--we can fit our introduction to your timeframe.

Learning outcomes:

  • Students will be able to identify at least 3 key library services/resources
  • Students will be able to articulate how to access library help and ask their question in a way that matches their needs.

Description:

A librarian can visit your course on campus or online to say hello and highlight some of the important ways the Library can help during their time at Harper. The librarian can provide a bit more detail than they can with a 5-minute visit.

For an asynchronous option, a librarian can recommend several brief videos that will introduce the Library and research at Harper.

Time needed:

20 minutes

Library Building Tour

Many new students have never been inside the Library on campus and have no idea how they can use the Library space. A tour will help them get familiar with the space and demystify a visit to the Library.

Learning outcome:

  • Students will be able to navigate the Library building to locate at least 5 key resources/services

Description:

A librarian will lead a brief tour, highlighting the Library's spaces and services. (A tour will require students to be able to move around the Library. Elevators are available.)

Time needed:

15-20 minutes

Library Scavenger Hunt

If you'd like your students to get a more interactive introduction to the Library that still presents the information of our basic introductions, our scavenger hunt activity is a great choice.

Learning outcomes:

  • Students will be able to articulate how to access library help
  • Students will be able to navigate the Library building (for on-campus version) or Library website (for online version) to locate at least 5 key resources/services

Description:

The scavenger hunt is completed via a Google Form and guides students to discover some of the most important features and services at the Library. There are versions for completing either online or on campus. It can also be assigned to students to complete on their own (asynchronously), or it can be done as a class activity and paired with a discussion with a librarian or any of the other activities described here.

Time needed:

20-40 minutes
