Our staff is here to help! Please review what we can and cannot assist with:
Staff can:
Help you get started with equipment and software
Provide basic troubleshooting and safety guidance
Explain how to use makerspace resources and tools
Refer you to tutorials, manuals, or training opportunities
Staff cannot:
Complete your projects for you
Provide in-depth technical instruction or personalized tutoring
Fix or repair personal devices or outside equipment
Supervise ongoing use of tools or stay with you during your entire session
Makerspaces are about access to creative tools so you can try out new projects on your own accord. We're here to support your learning journey to do that — not do the work for you, as we are not a product production facility. If you're unsure whether we can help, just ask!
In order to conserve Library Make Shop resources and provide a comfortable environment for all, we ask that you adhere to the following guidelines:
Snacks, (such as a piece of fruit, granola bar, a bag of chips) are permitted. Meals or messy, noisy or strong-smelling foods are not permitted.
Only covered beverages are permitted in the Make Shop near college-funded technology.
Unattended food and/or beverages are subject to being disposed by staff.
Clean up any spills right away, and alert library staff to any spills or messes requiring further attention.
Properly dispose of all food, trash, and recycling in appropriate receptacles, as food residue attracts insects and rodents.
Our table space is limited and prioritized for creative projects. If you need a space to sit and eat, the tables across the Bookstore and in neighboring Building Z are two close options to enjoy food before returning to the Library.
Please be mindful of your noise levels. Quiet conversations and collaborative work are encouraged, but excessive noise that disrupts others is not permitted.
Use headphones when listening to audio or watching videos.
If you're working in a group, consider moving to designated collaboration areas if extended discussion is needed.
The Make Shop is a safe and inclusive space for all users. Hateful, discriminatory, or abusive language or behavior will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
This is a public, shared environment — avoid discussing sensitive or personal topics out loud.
Use headphones for private calls or virtual meetings or take them to a designated quiet or private area, such as a study room if available.
Keep It Respectful
Conversations should remain civil, inclusive, and respectful at all times.
Offensive, aggressive, or inappropriate language will not be tolerated.
Respect others' right to a comfortable and focused workspace.
Let’s work together to maintain a welcoming, respectful environment for all. If you need assistance or experience disruptive behavior, please notify a staff member. Let's work together to keep the Make Shop welcoming and collaborative for everyone.
All Make Shop users must adhere to the following Harper College policies:
